2010 NFL Mock Draft - Round Two

In 2007 and 2008, Shawn competed in The Huddle Report's mock draft competition for the NFL Draft. This is a yearly national draft competition whose contestants include every major NFL and college football analyst in the nation. Out of 95 participants Shawn finished in the top 10% of contestants in the competition both years. In both 2008 and 2009, Shawn's final mock draft was more accurate than ESPN's Mel Kiper's by more than two player-to-team selections. Shawn's mock draft has also been more accurate than ESPN's Todd McShay's each of the last two years.

Round 1 | Round 2

Updated: February 24th, 2010

33 St. Louis Demaryius Thomas Wide Receiver Georgia Tech
Despite his recent broken ankle injury, Demaryius Thomas still ranks as one of the top wide receiver prospects in this year's draft. A similar prospect to former teammate Calvin Johnson, Thomas would provide the Rams with a player on the outside capable of developing into a No. 1 receiver at the next level. St. Louis is badly in need of an added threat on the outside, as their wide receiver core lacks depth and doesn't have an elite option in the passing game.
34 Detroit Perrish Cox Cornerback Oklahoma State
The Lions secondary ranked among the worst in football during the 2009 season, due in large part to their lack of production at the cornerback position. Safety Louis Delmas emerged as the leader of the defense, however Detroit needs to seriously consider adding a cornerback early in this year's draft. Perrish Cox has all of the tools needed to develop into a very good starting cornerback at the next level; the only question marks he brings is maturity questions.
35 Tampa Bay Dan Williams Defensive Tackle Tennessee
Fitting that the Buccaneers former defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin spent last season with the Tennessee Volunteers and I have the Bucs taking two of the players he coached in 2009. Tampa Bay was among the worst in the league in defending the run last season, which is one big reason why they are considering trading up to the first overall pick to draft Ndamukong Suh. If that doesn't happen, drafting Dan Williams, a strong, tough presence who is capable of being a fire hydrant on the interior of the defensive line, would be a great move to help upgrade their defensive line.
36 Kansas City Morgan Burnett Safety Georgia Tech
The Chiefs' largest need this offseason is at the safety position where they lack young, productive, talented players. The combination of Mike Brown and Jon McGraw may be one of the worst safety duos in the league and DaJuan Morgan still has yet to pan out. Morgan Burnett is an instinctive safety with a nose for the ball. He has a knack for making plays in the secondary, which is exactly what the Chiefs could use.
37 Washington Maurkice Pouncey Center Florida
The Redskins have needs at nearly every offensive line position this offseason. Assuming they draft Sam Bradford No. 4 overall, I'd expect to see the team take the best available offensive lineman with their second round pick. Such is the case here, as they land one of the top interior offensive linemen in this year's draft in Maurkice Pouncey. A quick center who is a fantastic run defender, Pouncey would be a great player for the team to build around on the offensive line for the future.
38 Cleveland Aaron Hernandez Tight End Florida
The Cleveland Browns lack skill players at both wide receiver and tight end. After trading Kellen Winslow last offseason, the Browns lack an elite option in the passing game, which is what Winslow was for the team. Aaron Hernandez is an extremely athletic prospect who offers versatility in the passing game. Adding him as a reliable target for whoever the Browns' future quarterback is would be beneficial to up-starting their offense.
39 Oakland Vladimir Ducasse Offensive Tackle Massachusetts
Going right along with the Raiders plan of drafting talented, athletic, raw players, Oakland lands what they hope to be their franchise left tackle in the second round in Vladimir Ducasse. Ducasse is a player that had a down week at the Senior Bowl, but still possesses plenty of upside and potential at the next level. With the Raiders needing a left tackle to help protect the quarterback, Ducasse would be a great project on the offensive line for them to develop.
40 Seattle Joe McKnight Running Back USC
Following the pattern of head coach Pete Carroll drafting former Trojans, the Seahawks land of the more explosive playmakers in this year's draft in running back Joe McKnight. A first-round talent who will likely fall to the second round in such a loaded draft, McKnight has the talent, potential, and upside to turn into a legitimate playmaker at the next level. McKnight would give the team an added threat in the running game, where he could team with Julius Jones to give them a more dynamic threat from the backfield.
41 Buffalo
Terrence Cody Defensive Tackle Alabama
The Bills own one of the worst run defenses in the NFL, and when you consider that they'll be changing their defense to a 3-4 scheme, they need to add a player who can be the centerpiece of their new defense. Terrence Cody is a mammoth defensive tackle who could fall in the draft due to weight/stamina/conditioning questions. He'd provide a stout interior presence for the team's new defense and would present great value at this point in the draft.
42 New England (from Jacksonville) Tim Tebow Quarterback Florida

Tim Tebow is one of the most talked-about players to enter the draft in history. His decorated college career justifies this talk, however he's far more of a project than his stats would lead you to believe. Because of this, I don't think there's a better fit for him than with the best head coach in the league, Bill Belichick. The smart and savy Belichick would know how to develop Tebow as a quarterback while also being able to take advantage of his fantastic talent and abilities. With three second-round picks, Tebow is a player that New England could be keying on with one of those pick.
43 Miami Sean Weatherspoon Linebacker Missouri

After landing the top receiver in the draft with their first round pick, the Dolphins will look to address their linebacker core, where they need some help. Sean Weatherspoon is a talented outside linebacker who translates well to the inside linebacker position in the 3-4 defense in the NFL. He'd provide a vocal and emotional leader for the team on the defensive side of the ball, which is something that Bill Parcells loves in his players.
44 Tampa Bay (from Chicago) Damian Williams Wide Receiver USC
The Buccaneers acquired this pick in exchange for the late Gaines Adams. In addition to having a gaping hole at defensive tackle, Tampa Bay lacks a down-field threat in the passing game. When you also consider that Antonio Bryant is likely headed out via free agency, the team will be looking closely at wide receiver in this year's draft. Damian Williams is one of the top receiver prospects in the draft and would likely go in the first round in any other year. He would give the Bucs a very talented target on the outside to pair with quarterback Josh Freeman.
45 Denver Reshad Jones Safety Georgia

The Broncos defense was vastly improved in 2009 from a year ago, however they still have some holes to fill. At safety, Renaldo Hill had a decent season, while Brian Dawkins added another great season to his stellar career. However, Dawkins turns 37-years old next season and his career could be coming to a close soon. The team needs to get young at the safety position, which is shown in their recent draft picks of David Bruton and Josh Barrett. An athletic safety from Georgia, Reshad Jones has the type of talent that scouts look for in a future starting safety at the next level. Adding him would give the Broncos a player that they know they can count on for the future in the secondary.

46 New York Giants Brian Price Defensive Tackle UCLA

A player who reminds me a bit of Warren Sapp, Brian Price has the combination of talent, athleticism, and quickness off the ball that scouts look for in a successful defensive tackle at the next level. The New York Giants will be looking to upgrade at the defensive tackle position this offseason. Both Fred Robbins and Barry Cofield are adequate starters on the interior of the line, however the Giants are looking for a playmaker at the tackle, which is exactly what Price has the potential to develop into. Adding him to their already-talented defensive line would help to return the Giants defense to being one of the league's elite.

47 Carolina Everson Griffen Defensive End USC

With the impending departure of defensive end Julius Peppers via free agency, Carolina will be looking to address the defensive end position in this year's draft. They added Everette Brown in last year's draft, who will likely take over for Peppers, however I'd like to see the team continue to upgrade the end position, where Charles Johnson and Tyler Brayton are adequate starters, but aren't going to develop into stars. Everson Griffen is a very talented player who would likely go in the first round in any other year. A prototypical 4-3 end who is polished as a pass rusher and run defender, Griffen has the type of talent and potential to make an instant impact for a Panthers defense that will need one after losing Peppers.

48 New England (from Tennessee) Donovan Warren Cornerback Michigan

At the cornerback position, the Patriots drafted Darius Butler in 2009, who performed well as a rookie last season. With Leigh Bodden a candidate to leave via free agency as well as Shawn Springs' only being a short-term fix, New England will be in the market to add another cornerback in this year's draft. With three second round picks and one first rounder, it's safe to assume that they may take one with one of their first four picks. Donovan Warren is an athletic cornerback who didn't receive the type of exposure that his talent would dictate, which is due in large part to Michigan's struggles the past couple of years. Warren has the potential and upside to develop into a starting cornerback at the next level, and would pair very well with Butler on the outside.

49 San Francisco Myron Rolle Safety Florida State

One of the largest risers from this year's Senior Bowl, Myron Rolle looked like a player who had just come off a fantastic 2009 season, not one that took an entire year off. At safety, the 49ers are looking to make an upgrade, where starter Michael Lewis has recorded just three interceptions in three seasons. Dashon Goldson has proven to be a nice, young starter for the team, however they could stand to improve the other position. With how intelligent and instinctive Rolle is, I guarantee that head coach Mike Singletary will be enamored with Rolle. Myron plays just like Singletary did, in that he was always one of the, if not the smartest player on the field. He'd be a terrific fit to help lead the 49ers' secondary into the future.

50 Kansas City (from Atlanta) Dezmon Briscoe Wide Receiver Kansas
Kansas City acquired this pick from Atlanta in the Tony Gonzalez trade last year. The Chiefs' offense has been one that has lacked any sort of consistency in the passing game. Dwayne Bowe is the team's top threat through the air, however he's been an inconsistent player and there's been talk over the past year or two that the team could be looking to move him. Whether or not they do, Kansas City needs to add another option in the passing game. Dezmon Briscoe, who would be a fan favorite remaining in the midwest, is a taller, more physical receiver who has the potential to develop into a No. 1 receiver at the next level. With this year being a make-or-break year for quarterback Matt Cassell, the Chiefs will need to do whatever it takes to help him succeed in 2010.
51 Houston Patrick Robinson Cornerback Florida State

With the future of Dunta Robinson up in the air, the Texans will be looking to upgrade the cornerback position in this year's draft. They lack overall depth at the position as well, which is why corner will be one of their higher priorities this offseason. Patrick Robinson is a very talented and athletic player whose best football may still be in front of him. He has the potential to develop into a starting cornerback in the NFL.
52 Pittsburgh Dominique Franks Cornerback Oklahoma

The Steelers secondary ranked in the middle of the pack from a yards-per-game standpoint in 2009, however they were among the worst in the league in intercepting the ball, with only two picks coming from the cornerback position. From what I've heard, Pittsburgh has made the cornerback position one of their top priorities this offseason. Dominique Franks is an underclassmen who entered the draft somewhat unexpectedly. He was one of the top defensive players on a great defense last season and presents very good upside at the next level.

53 New England Corey Wootton Defensive End Northwestern
With Richard Seymour gone, the Patriots relied on Ron Brace and Myron Pryor to fill his hole last season. New England could stand to add another man up front in the 3-4 defense. With three second-round picks, this is the year to add that player. Corey Wootton is a player that reminds me a lot of Jason Taylor, and he could have that type of impact at the next level. Wootton would be a great fit as a 3-4 defensive end in the Patriots' defense.
54 Cincinnati Mardy Gilyard Wide Receiver Cincinnati
The Bengals signed Laveranues Coles last offseason to replace TJ Houshmandzadeh and to fill the hole opposite Chad Ochocinco. That didn't work out as well as they had hoped, and outside of Andre Caldwell occasionaly making a play, the team lacks another threat to help draw coverage away from Chad. Mardy Gilyard is a talented playmaker who can beat you in a number of different ways. Adding Jermaine Gresham as well as Gilyard in the second would do a lot to help propel Cincinnati's offense into the future. Coming from the Bearcats, Gilyard would be one of the team's biggest fan favorites.
55 Philadelphia Selvish Capers Offensive Tackle West Virginia
The Shawn Andrews/Stacy Andrews experiment failed in 2009, which resulted in quarterback Donovan McNabb running for his life at times this past season. To add a reliable and stable piece to their offensive line, Philadelphia would be best served to address the offensive tackle position in this year's draft. A pure right tackle with excellent athleticism, Selvish Capers is a bit of a raw prospect who is somewhat of a project at the next level, however he presents terrific upside and has the potential to develop into a very good offensive lineman in the NFL. He'd be a great fit as a right tackle for the Eagles.
56 Green Bay Charles Brown Offensive Tackle USC
Having led the league in sacks in 2009, the Packers will be on the lookout for offensive linemen in the 2010 Draft. After adding a playmaking running back with their first round pick, Green Bay turns to offensive tackle with this pick. Charles Brown is a talented, but raw tackle who would likely go in the first round in any other year, but with this year's stacked draft, he stands a decent chance of falling to the second round. Brown would add an athletic tackle up front to help re-build the Packers offensive line and would give the team a player to build around for the future.
57
Baltimore Rob Gronkowski Tight End Arizona
Last year the Ravens were looking to draft Brandon Pettigrew in the first round before the Detroit Lions snatched him up with the No. 20 pick in the draft. With three very talented tight ends in this year's draft, I'd expect to see them target one of them. Rob Gronkowski is a polished and reliable tight end who didn't play a down during the 2009 season due to injury. He entered the 2010 Draft with the impression of going in the first two rounds, which is very likely at this point. With the durability issues that have plagued current starter Todd Heap, the Ravens could use a more durable and reliable tight end; Gronkowski could be just that for them.
58 Arizona Ed Dickson Tight End Oregon
The Arizona Cardinals' offense has everything but an elite tight end to help stretch the seam down the field. With a passing game lacking a great option in the middle of the field, Ed Dickson is the type of player who would be a great fit in the team's aerial attack. An athletic and underrated prospect in this year's draft, Dickson has the potential to develop into a quality tight end at the next level. Adding a reliable option in the passing game in the mold of Dickson would do a lot to help ease the transition to being a starter for quarterback Matt Leinart.
59 Dallas Nate Allen Safety South Florida
At safety, Ken Hamlin has been less than stellar the last two seasons for the Cowboys after having a great first year in Dallas. Gerald Sensabaugh also didn't offer much from a production standpoint in 2009. After having already added a new threat to their passing game in Golden Tate, Dallas would be best served to address the safety position with their next pick. Nate Allen has the tools, skills, and intangibles needed to develop into a quality safety in the NFL. He'd bring a reliable and consistent player to the team's safety position, which is something that the Cowboys don't currently have.
60 San Diego Tyson Alualu Defensive End California
After losing Jamal Williams for the season last year, it was obvious that the rest of the Charger's 3-4 defensive line was nothing spectacular, especially after losing Igor Olshansky to the Cowboys in 2009. The team could stand to aggressively look at upgrading the defensive line in the 2010 Draft. Tyson Alualu is a versatile player who played defensive end in Cal's 3-4 defense and would be a terrific fit to play the same position in San Diego. He'd also be a fan favorite for the team.
61 New York Jets Brandon LaFell Wide Receiver LSU

After upgrading their secondary in the first round, the Jets turn to the offensive side of the ball where they need to add another receiver in their passing game. Jericho Cotchery has been a stable player for the team over the course of his career, and while Braylon Edwards made a decent amount of plays for the team in 2009, he also was inconsistent and dropped several key passes. Brandon LaFell is another big receiver who has the potential to develop into a fine No. 1 or No. 2 receiver in this year's draft and would give New York another legitimate threat in their passing game.

62
Minnesota Jon Asamoah Offensive Guard Illinois
This offseason the Minnesota Vikings will be looking to upgrade their right guard position where they have not been satisfied with the play of Anthony Herrera. They'd like to continue to add young and high-upside players to their line, which is exactly what Jon Asamoah is. A top-notch run blocker for the Illini who also does a great job as a pass blocker, Asamoah has all of the tools that scouts look for in a future starting offensive guard at the next level. He'd be a great fit for the team to place between Jon Sullivan and Phil Loadholt on the right side of the line.
63 Indianapolis Rennie Curran Linebacker Georgia
At linebacker, both Clint Session and Gary Brackett have done a great job for Indianapolis, while at outside linebacker Phillip Wheeler is still developing. With the future unclear for Brackett, I could see the Colts deciding to add another young, talented linebacker to the unit. Rennie Curran is an undersized player who plays with one of the best motors in this year's draft and is an absolute tackling machine at linebacker. He'd fit the Colts' scheme of having undersized, but quick and fast players at the linebacker position. Curran has the potential to develop into a very good player in the right scheme; the best scheme for him in the NFL is in Indianapolis.
64 New Orleans Daryl Washington Linebacker TCU
The Super Bowl Champs made a great run during the 2009, with a new and improved defense helping to balance with their fantastic offense. At linebacker, Jonathan Vilma played very well, but with both Scott Shanle and Scott Fujita getting up there in age, I'd expect to see New Orleans begin to address the linebacker position this offseason in searching for future starters at the position. Daryl Washington is an excellent player whose talent and athleticism has not gone un-noticed by scouts, despite being underrated from an exposure standpoint. Washington has the type of upside and potential that teams look for in a linebacker prospect, and he'd be a great fit for the team to pair with Vilma in their linebacker core.
